Energy from kites!

A popular childrens toy could well could provide the next breakthrough in renewable energy! After successful testing in one of Europe’s top research centres with scientists from Delft University of Technology in the Netherlands, 10 kilowatts of power was produced by flying a giant kite tethered to a generator. 10 kilowatts of power is enough electricity to run 10 family homes, and all from a 10-sq metre kite. The researchers are planning to test a 50kW version in the near future, called Laddermill, eventually they hope to produce a version with multiple kites that could generate as much as 100 megawatts (this could power 100,000 homes!)

The scientists from Delft University are not alone. Google.org (a philanthropic arm of the Google web-search company) invested 10 million dollars last year in another kite company based in the US called Makani. There is also an Italian company called Kitegen which has proposed a theoretical design for a kite system generating a gigawatt of electricity using 12 sets of four 500 sq metre kites.

The aim of all these teams is to tap into the vast energy resources of high-altitude wind (a kilometre or more above the ground), where winds carry hundreds of times more energy than at ground level and are also more consistent. According to Ken Caldeira (a senior climate scientist at Stanford University), the total energy contained in high altitude wind is 100 times greater than the amount of energy currently required by the whole planet.

Commercial wind turbines simply cannot be built high enough to take advantage of these winds at high altitudes but kites can easily reach a kilometre or more of altitude. In Europe there are many sites suitable, thanks to the high-speed jet stream, for large scale power generation using kites.

The kites generate power by pulling on a wire attached to a generator on the ground, the rapid speed of the rising kite generates copious amounts of power then once the kite has reached maximum altitude it is simply reeled in to repeat the process.

Unlike many other proposed alternative technologies, high altitude wind power is available right now, it is estimated that with sufficient capital investment, commercially viable systems producing electricity at around 10c per kilowatt hour could be established in less than 5 years.

It is not only the salt from chemical view that the body needs salt in order to maintain our entire bodily functions, but the salt, from biophysical view, will always be able to bring the body back into its natural energy vibration rhythm.

I. Salt Crystal Lamps and Ionization
World-wide laboratory tests with the most diverse kinds of measuring methodology furnished the proof that the lit salt crystal lamps deliver ions to our environment. Primarily, the research points to an increased number of negative ions. The emission of ions is primarily caused by the alternating actions of the salt’s ability to first absorb water, then evaporate it. To explain this more precisely, the heated salt crystal attracts the water molecules from the ambient air to its surface. The salt goes into a solution as it mixes with the water molecules. Here however it is pointed out that the emission of ions by heated salt crystal lamps, should not be regarded as the primary characteristic, because from scientific standpoint, the surplus of negative ions is negligible. More important is its ability to clean the ambient air.
Depending upon size and surface area of the salt crystal used for the lamp, the ambient air surrounding it is measurably cleaned by the transformation cycle of hydrogen and oxygen, as well as sodium and chloride ions. II. Salt Crystal Lamps and Electromagnetic Oscillation
The Earth is surrounded by an electromagnetic belt, and within this belt every form of life comes and goes. Therefore, every form of life on this planet earth depends on the power of this electromagnetic field of vibration, known as the Schuman resonance frequency, which states that the given frequency of this electromagnetic field is at 7.83 Hz (cycles) per second . This value in known to be the resonant frequency of our earth. The resonant frequency is the most often frequency of measurement applied to mammals and can be measured as the resonant frequency of our brains with an EEG. Also, a salt crystal, in its neutral state, exhibits this exact frequency oscillation value. But due to our industrialized and technical way of life, the human organism is being affected, particularly in our homes and offices, to artificial electromagnetic wavelengths with the most diverse frequency values, caused by electronics devices. Customer Review: Educational, but challenging for an 8 year old.

As a science teacher, I can say this a great educational teaching tool, but it’s also a bit challenging. It says for ages 8 and up, but it’s probably more appropriate for 10 and up. I got it for my almost 8 year old science-psyched son and we decided to put it away for at least 6 months since many of the activities were more difficult than he was ready for at this time.

Customer Review: Great toy with a great message

I bought this for my 15-year-old son who is very interested in alternative fuels and transportation, and it’s incredible. My son played with it for about 8 hours straight and still does every chance he gets. The car teaches you about how a fuel cell works, and you get to see with your own eyes how simple the technology actually is. While I don’t necessarily believe hydrogen fuel cells are the answer on their own, they will likely be part of the solution to our decreasing oil supply. The only negative thing I have to say about this item is that the rubber wheels tend to come off easily, so we’ve ended up running it without them.

The frog has some assembly when it arrives, but it is very cute and jumps. It seems sturdy enough to last a while. It turns when it jumps and looses the light so it stops quickly to need adjusting to the sunlight. Both the 4 and 7 year old boys enjoy playing with it.

Customer Review: Frog won’t hop

I recently purchased this kit. The instructions were clear enough and assembly wasn’t overly difficult, but I found that after it was assembled it wouldn’t work. The frog is supposed to work by having the solar-powered motor wind up (and release) its spring-driven rear legs. The motor works OK, as do the gears that go between the motor and the cam that winds up the legs. Unfortunately, however, the gears are connected to the cam by a smooth round rod, and the friction between that rod and the cam isn’t enough to move the legs - the rod rotates, but the cam doesn’t move. I tried to fix this by putting a drop of superglue in the cam and then reattaching it to the rod, but must have used a little too much, gluing the cam to the body. The rear legs rotate on a hexagonal rod that prevents the sort of slippage I described - it’s too bad they didn’t do something similar for connecting the gears to the cam.

Anyway, I wouldn’t recommend this kit to anyone. I did get a small solar cell and pager motor out of it that should be usable for some other project, but still resent that I was suckered into paying for a piece of junk like this kit. I’m honestly curious whether anyone has ever gotten it to work.
